Automaton discussion Essay In today’s combat zone unmanned flying frameworks (UASs) otherwise called unmanned flying vehicles (UAVs), remotely directed vehicles (RPVs) or automatons are the United States Department of Defense’s most disputable barrier weapon to date. Numerous US top leaders and master in military history, knowledge, and global security, says that unmanned airborne frameworks or UAS, as specialists call them, are the most significant new military innovation in the twenty-first century since the intercontinental ballistic rocket. With the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) composing rules to permit UAS to fly in American skies these days, rambles are additionally introducing the most emotional new age in flight since the stream motor. Just twelve years prior, nobody saw everything coming and maybe it is even appears to be a sci-fi. UAVs and UASs are not a moderately new barrier weapon or an advanced robot however in truth they have been around since the 1930’s in the free type of Austrian inflatables which is utilized for observation in those days. Be that as it may, with the headway of innovation for as long as scarcely any years, rambles have gotten the most proficient, powerful, and precise intends to accumulate insight and data, observation, and reconnaissance without placing the lives of our fighters and authorities in peril at the bleeding edges. Automatons have been effective in focusing on and murdering prominent psychological militants (a considerable lot of whom were top Al-Qaeda and Taliban activists) and limiting regular citizen setbacks. They have likewise been effective in limiting U.S. trooper losses in light of the fact that the pilots are flying these vehicles in U.S. soil or some place safe away from the contention zone. Automatons have been and will keep on being a significant effective factor in the U.S.’s war on dread. In the mean time then again, as advantageous and helpful as automatons may be, they are likewise one of the most questionable weapons utilized in light of the fact that, universally, they disregard the United Nation’s Charter; abusing a country’s regional power and national honesty. Despite the fact that they are exact in wiping out their objectives, they have killed an excessive number of blameless regular people who happened to be at an unlucky spot. As the years progressed, the U.S. has progressively utilized automatons to target and slaughter speculated fear based oppressors, expanding the quantity of regular citizen setbacks during the assault. Thus, an ever increasing number of individuals (chiefly in Pakistan-who were impartial in the U.S.- Pakistan struggle) are getting baffled or losing trust with U.S. military strategies and starting to favor Pakistani activists, perhaps crashing their objective of vote based system in the area. Comparable to blameless non military personnel losses, if Pakistan or another nation needed to carry issue to universal criminal court, who will be charged? Will the warrior guiding the airplane be charged, or his leader? Will previous President Bush or President Obama be indicted? In any case, the global lawful issue encompassing automatons are still foggy and don't appear to be cleared at any point in the near future particularly with the war on dread is as yet seething in the Middle East. Not exclusively do the automaton technique raise issues universally, there is likewise a ton of debate encompassing them locally. The administration and numerous organizations consider automatons to be an extraordinary innovative favorable position to society or open life. They are can be utilized for reconnaissance of the U.S.- Mexican outskirt, scan for overcomers of catastrophic events through warmth sensor innovation, out of control fire battling, showering pesticides, and looking for radiation or risky substance spills. By the by, household automatons can likewise be utilized to attack citizens’ protection. As of late, Congress permitted the FAA to permit more than 70 automatons to work in U.S. airspace. These local automatons can be furnished with infrared cameras, heat sensors, GPS, and robotized tag perusers, making it simple to follow individuals. These residential automatons should be utilized by common associations just; be that as it may, they can without much of a stretch fall into an inappropriate hands and be figured out and abused to accomplish more mischief than anything. Since 9/11 the congressional has affirmed the utilization of military automatons on the war on dread because of their proficiency, adequacy, and exactness. In this way making the US outfitted automatons one of the most frightful flying machine in the sky of Middle East and being utilized commonly to bring down a prominent objective with high rate or changes to be hit inside seconds . why automatons are productive ? Well above all else they are a programmed flying framework , hence the automatons can work inside a bigger size of activity as opposed to their human partners in the F-16 or RAPTOR stream. for instance before the automatons are furnished in the year 2000’s the vast majority of the US aviation based armed forces tasks are depending on planes to do some surveillance , in this way the people factor must be include in the whole hours of that activity and making it less successful than rambles on the grounds that as people our faculties and vitality or the ability to accomplish some work is very constrained. What's more, the length of the activity is additionally dictated by the fuel inside the stream which devour a colossal measure of fuel particularly for military battle fly, so without the automatons the activity could just most recent daily or two max. be that as it may, with the automatons the length of the activity hours could be stretched out essentially , because of their new creative flying vitality and framework inside the automatons which are exceptionally valuable . The automatons are a littler plane consequently they have a lighter body and no human is required inside the automatons, hence making it significantly more lighter to cover a bigger region to do some surveillance with considerably more speed and better execution . obviously the littler the plane the littler the vitality is required to top it off, consequently the US aviation based armed forces needs to build their automaton ability with their new innovative energy unit or an electric battery which could enable the automatons to fly for a significant distance with a more extended term instead of an ordinary flying planes. With this new innovation the automatons are not simply restricted to their human controller in the protected zone , however on account of their fuel and weight productivity they can work for a more drawn out span with their auto pilot on which make it significantly more solid and effectively to work. It may not appears to be a colossal or a major progressive favorable position, yet this is a significant enormous improvement in the course of recent decades since now we could have an eye from the sky to look out for a potential objective in the hot zone of the contention region without taking a chance with the lives of our military and the automatons can do it for at any rate day in and day out hours , so they can keep up the foe position as long as possible before they have to return to the base to refuel and rearmed . This is vital in light of the fact that with the most recent information we can have the most modern data which will give our military a more noteworthy force to achieve this war on dread . Automatons are powerful for murdering as well as they are likewise acceptable to do some reconnaissance .Which is by a wide margin the most well-known utilization of automatons, if maybe the least discussed. The U.S. military as of now thinks about automatons as a feature of a coordinated framework, where automatons are being utilized, especially along the hilly Afghan/Pakistan outskirt, to give long haul observing of a populace, and to take care of the thorniest of issues confronting involving armed forces battling agitators â€mainly distinguishing the regular citizens and the warriors. By checking these zones, 24 hours per day, seven days per week, the U.S. military plans to utilize automatons to accumulate ‘patterns of life’ or ‘signatures’ in surveilled networks, permitting them to distinguish when something disturbs that ‘pattern of life,’ or otherwise called the guerilla movement.

Sikh/ Hindus in the United States of America

Introduction Sikhism/Hindu is an Indian religion that emerged in the United States of America in the early 19th century. Hindu can be typically referred to as Santana Dharma and as well as Vaidika Dharma. There was a very tough situation in India due to the British colonial power. This affected the financial systems and the economy, thus making many Indians to migrate. The Indians immigrated gradually to America where they have grown into big numbers.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Sikh/ Hindus in the United States of America specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Many immigrated to avoid problems that prevailed in their nations, as others went to study and to live there. Some problems in their mother countries included poverty, poor economy, security issues, and medical issues. Despite the challenges they face from the hosts, the Sikhs/ Hindus have continued to live and with time have acquired recognition. T his has also helped them to emerge into the bliss of great opportunities and advantages. This paper seeks to search the plight of Sikhs/ Hindus in the United States of America. Challenges faced by the Sikhs/ Hindus There are several challenges facing the Sikh and Hindu religions at large, which are either internal or external. Generally, as a religion, Hindu has received opposition over years for its beliefs and for its social and political force. In addition to this, some of them are depicted disrespectful in the field of academia (Otto 215). The Sikhs fellow students from other religions have ridiculed most Sikh students although the constitution provides for their civil liberty. On the other hand, some face the internal challenge of not being conversant with their religion. Others also don’t understand fully their way of life. The Sikh religion cannot be identified on basis of secondary sources but primary sources. It has had a series of challenges since 1708 when its iden tity began to face opposition seeking to dissolve it completely. With no study up to date to support the Sikh identity, the fight to diffusing it still goes on. Religious challenges The major religious challenge of the Sikhs and Hindus in general is the misconception many people bear, that all Hindus or Sikhs are Indians. This is opposed to the rising number of non Indians who are Hindus. The belief by Hindus that in marriage two families get into covenant has received a great opposition. This opposition has led to many Hindus dropping the religious rule and marrying on the partners’ covenant. Many people have not received awareness on the Sikh/Hindu identity. This continues to be the reason why many still don’t value the Hindu. Comparing the number of the Hindus and other religions existing in America, the opposition was massive. Advocating against such majority would be an extreme task. This made many Hindus to shy off and step back to give way to the majority. Cultu ral challenges The Sikh people faced a great challenge in the United States. Between 2007 and 2010, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) came up with new amendments in these regulations. The regulations provided that when checking headgears, the person was required to remove it. This was against the culture of the Sikh people.Advertising Looking for research paper on religion theology? Let's see if we can help you! According to the Sikh culture, one is only allowed to remove the turban when bathing. No other circumstance should make them remove it. They also count it as inconvenient to remove the turban in public. It is also a dishonor to remove somebody’s turban or touch it with dirty hands or even any person who does not agree with their belief system. Following the bombing attacks to the United States in the September 11, hate arose against the Sikh people. Every person with a turban on the head was counted a terrorist and therefore was mistreated. The Sikhs/Hindus received mistreatments as mistaken identities. Statistics show that the experience by the Sikh could only be compared to the Chinese Americans after Chinese people attacked the Pearl Harbor. Lack of cultural awareness by other religions has caused the Hindus a great loss, despite the fact that the Sikhs have been there for over 100 years. The Sikhs, with a great desire and hope that one day awareness about their culture will reign, have paid tribute to the American culture as well as to their own culture. The Sikhs leadership has worked up and down to prevent the advancing of the rough treatment they receive after September 11. This has not born much fruits with the low level of the identity awareness. Sikhs/Hindus and Other Religions Both Christianity and Islam do not have a recorded revelation, whereas the Sikh has one , Kartarpuri Bir. The Bible and the Quran are said to be culturally and historically made, since they’ve been written after the death of their Prophets. Due to envy, Sikh religion has been fought heavily in order to bring confusion among its followers. Another big challenge is that the Hindus are divided and dispersed unevenly in the states. They have different languages and tend to group themselves according to their languages. The languages have been divided into Nahuati and Yucatec Mayan. History of Hindu The first four Indians came into the United States on 6th April 1899. Majority of the subsequent immigrants were the Sikhs/ Hindus, who live in the state of Punjab in India. Statistics show that 90% of the immigrants were Indians while Muslims made 10%. Due to the British colonialism, which at that time colonized India, the economy of India deteriorated. This led to the migration of most of the Indians to America. After settling in America, many of them worked in big farm s as others worked as the railway constructors. Their hard work enabled them to gain financial stability within a relatively short period.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Sikh/ Hindus in the United States of America specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Hinduism in America is a small religion which is slowly growing. It originated from India and Nepal. It forms an estimated 0.4% of the American’s population. Hindu began officially in America after 1965 after passing the Immigration and Nationality Services (INS) Act. It was after the act when Hindus with different agendas began to settle in America (Rao 263). Some came to preach the religion as others came to work and settle. Before 1965, immigration of the Hindu to America was a banned case and only students, tourists, and visitors were allowed. However, historians argue that in the early 1820s several Indians had already settled in America. Up to th e 19th century, an approximate of 800 Indians had already moved into America. Several Indians who were working in companies in the America at that time faced opposition by natives who saw them as threat for jobs. Following this, in 1907 many Indians were forced to flee after the natives attacked their places of work. Successes of Sikh/ Hindu religion It is said that Indians who settled in America have grown academically more than the natives in all genders and ages. Most of them have completed the undergraduate and graduate studies as well as postgraduate studies (Deyhle 8). This has led to a high level of education in the Indian community within the United States of America. According to the results given after a census was conducted, many Indians have high academic qualifications compared to the natives. Statistics show that more than 54% of the Indians have such qualifications. In early 2000, statistics show that an average Indian worker earned $29,745 with females having an aver age of $16,078 and males having $40,551. These statistics also depicted the education level difference between the two genders. The living standards for Indian families were also seen to be very high with the fact that many of them lived as families with every one of them earning. Up to date Sikh/ Hindu have grown in high rate in the United States of America. Statistics show that in 1900 their population was 1700, 387,000 in 1980, and 1.1 million in 1997. Currently, the population of the Sikh/Hindu is two million. Between 20,000 and 30,000 Sikhs/ Hindus are employed creating a market value of $200 billion dollars in the technology sector. By 1920, the Sikh/ Hindu became great farmers owning 2099 acres of land as well 86340 acres land, which was on lease. This success came as a result of the previous experience with the colonial masters as well as their hard work. The freedom to own this land gave them a motivation to live among the hosts. The fact that they were used to this kind of life in India, made them feel at home thus boosting their familiarity as well as security.Advertising Looking for research paper on religion theology? In many circumstances, the hosts, who are the majority, have acted oddly to them excluding them as immigrants (Khushwant 242). They were treated like slaves. The Sikhs were restricted from marrying from Punjab and even America. If in any case one married an American, the American ceased to be a citizen. In addition, they were restricted from acquiring citizenship. Intermarriage occurred between them and the Mexican Catholic group. In the course of these, the language remained a problem. Even after going through opposition to get educated, the Sikh/ Hindus received rejection in working places and others were even denied employment and accommodation. The antidiscrimination laws existed just not for them. In majority of interviews, many were asked how prepared they were to abandon the turban and cut their hair. This pushed m any of them into self employment and family businesses. Currently a good number of American natives have admitted to accommodate the Sikh/ Hindus after understanding their culture and value for human rights. However, this still depends on the awareness of their identity. Many Sikhs/ Hindus received employment in big companies and in top positions. An awareness of their identity has circulated in many parts of the United States leading to peaceful interactions. There also exist ideological and generational differences between the Hindus. This was experienced way back in 1993 when they split into three small groups each claiming to have inherited the Hindu traditions, as discussed earlier. This was after the people opposing the Sikh / Hindu religion imposed much pressure on them. In addition, the Hindus face variety of problems ranging from poor infrastructure, poverty, poor security, poor medical facilities, illiteracy, and overpopulation. These are problems said to have been inheren t also in India. Problems faced by the Sikh/ Hindu within The biggest problem was the fear of whether to expose themselves or not. They feared being recognized as a distinct religion by the hosts. According to their tradition, they were supposed to maintain their major values which are the 5ks i.e. kachh (a type of shorts), kirpan (a sword), kes (unshorn hair), Kara (a steel bangle) and kangha (a comb in the hair). This did not depend on the environment or the color of the person. However, a person had a choice to discard the principles of the traditions and abandon the outward representation of faith. This would mean such a person was to be classified differently. There were three classifications. The first class would include those who absolutely gave up the religion and joined another one. The second class would consist of those who give in to the pressure and pass the blame to the intolerant people. The third class would cut their hair, remove the turban, and defend that faith w as not shown keeping the hair or having the turban. There was enough pressure for many of them to give in. It therefore called for a great faith for one to stand with the principles of the tradition. The pressure sometimes went to the extent of death. The Hindus faced the problem of not being able to solve interpersonal and family issues, which has led to a great conflict from generation to generation. Such conflicts range from conflicts about sex, marriage, choice of careers, dating, food, and drugs (Barrier and Dusenbery 136). This has been because of their traditions, which should never be breached, and if one tries to breach them then he/she is liable to die. Most of such traditions are against children and women. The culture prevents the media from exposing this. Conclusion The Sikh/ Hindu in America have gone through a gradual change. Though they are few, they’ve worked hard to receive recognition. Their identity awareness remains uncompleted mission with some people st ill ill-treating them. They hold firmly to the principles of their culture and religion but live an inward looking life. They have paid tribute to the American culture hoping that one day their culture will also receive total recognition. This remains a dream to be realized in real time. They are currently working hard to spread the awareness of their identity. Moreover, they have established themselves both academically and economically. They are highly educated owners of big businesses contributing greatly to the economy. The September 11 attack gave rise to the desire to know more about the Sikhs and their role in America. The Sikhs/ Hindu are human beings entitled to full and complete human rights. They deserve to be treated with love and consideration. On the other hand, they also ought to do the same to others. If all people were aware of others identity, then the whole world would be living in peace and gradual development. Everyone should endeavor to know and understand othe r people’s identity. Why women are enthusiastic about Birkin bag by Hermes Research Paper - 1

Why women are enthusiastic about Birkin bag by Hermes - Research Paper Example It is included in Forbes magazine’s Most Extravagant Handbags list. Bag prices range from US$6,000 to US$120,000 depending on the materials used and the craftsmanship that goes with it (Prabhakar, 2007). So, why do women go gaga over a Birkin bag? What strategy does Hermes adopt making it very successful all these years despite tough competition and the worldwide financial crisis? Where lies the â€Å"mystery† of the Hermes Birkin? According to Hermes CEO, Patrick Thomas, â€Å"Hermes has no desire to become a â€Å"masstige† (a mass producer of prestige goods) (Wright, 2009). Our strategy will be a strategy of value, not a strategy of volume; we are not in the mass luxury† (Agathe, Imadec-Bentata & Zimmerman, 2009, p. 8). They say no to short-term profit; thus, even in times of recession, few discounts are offered (Xie, n.d.) They cannot compromise the quality and the finishing of the product just to increase their sales (Wright, 2009). Hermes strategy is centered on the respect of the legacy of the luxury brand’s history, its heritage. (Xie, n.d.) Their mission is the pursuit of excellence. They adopt a model of scarcity to preserve its prestige and integrity. They do not change their strategy according to the state of the economy (Wright, 2009). They stick to the rule of luxury, that is, even in the worst financial crisis; the world will still have rich people who would like to hold on to exclusive items that can hold value such as a Birkin bag (Xie, n.d.). A purchase of a Birkin bag is viewed not an expense but an investment that could last for 40 years and whose price could go up to more than double as the years go by (Wright, 2009). One of the marketing techniques employed by Hermes is to keep a waiting list with high-profile customers such as Hollywood stars. They also put a â€Å"Reserved† sign on their display bag and they limit the number of Birkin sold to each customer for every purchase

Cold War Years Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Cold War Years - Essay Example The strength of the country is based on its alliance with the United States, which has to be sustained in order to continue strengthening its position in the region (Forsberg 3). As a capitalist country that pursues a free market, it is essential to note that its alliance with the United States has helped it stem any potential aggression towards it from the Soviet Union. Japan has the advantage of having a ready market for its products in the United States and this has enabled it to ensure its continued economic growth while at the same time helping it stabilize it after the Second World War. As a result of its alliance with the United States, Japan has once again come to attain a preeminent role in the world and this is no mean feat considering the dire conditions in the country after the war. Japan has numerous threats both domestic and external that have a potential of undermining its position. Among these is the increasing aggressiveness of the Soviet Union in the Asian region. The Soviet Union shares a common border with Japan and this has a potential of conflict taking place as a result of a possible violation of its borders. Furthermore, Japan might end up being a target of the communist regimes that are springing up across the region as seen in Vietnam and North Korea, at the instigation of the Soviet Union. The history of Japan and neighboring states such as Korea and China prior to the Second World War has left these countries with a sense of injustice and hatred that might result in their choosing to attack Japan as a means of exacting revenge. It has therefore become essential for Japan to take swift action in order to safeguard its interests against those who would seek to undermine it. Currently, Japan does not have any conflicts with any other country in the region and the government should strive to ensure that the situation remains the same. Among the most

How policies and procedures help children Essay Example for Free

How policies and procedures help children Essay Discuss how policies and procedures help children and young people and their families whilst the child is being looked after. In this essay I am going to discuss 6 policies and their procedures whist a child is being looked after. I am going to expand on why this is important for the child parent or legal guardian and also why they are put in place. Firstly I am going to discuss the Safeguarding Policy. Safeguarding Policy Safeguarding is the policy that describes the function of protecting adults and children from abuse or neglect. It is an important shared priority of many public services, and a key responsibility of local authorities.Safeguarding relates to the need to protect certain people who may be in vulnerable circumstances. These are people who may be at risk of abuse or neglect, due to the actions (or lack of action) of another person usually their parent or carer. In these cases, it is critical that services work together to identify people at risk, and put in place interventions to help prevent abuse or neglect, and to protect Safe guarding helps make sure the people whom are protecting the children are correctly checked for example a CRB is mandatory when looking after a vulnerable child. What is a DBS check and why is it needed? Since March 2002, the Criminal Records Bureau has enabled employers to check the criminal records of employees and potential employees, in order to ascertain whether or not they are suitable to work with vulnerable adults and children. For individuals working in certain positions, a valid DBS disclosure is a legislative requirement. The Disclosure and Barring Service also manage lists of individuals who are barred from working with children and adults. New safeguarding regulations introduced in October 2009 place an obligation on employers, social services and professional regulators to notify the DBS of relevant information. This obligation ensures that individuals who pose a threat to vulnerable groups can be barred from working with them. It also makes it a criminal offence for these individuals to apply to work with these groups and for employers to knowingly employ them. This makes sure the child is safe whilst being cared for by a  professional or a carer whom isnt their parent or legal guardian. It is also important so the parents or carers know the child is in safe hands whilst being cared for out of their control. Recording and Handling Information Policy Recording and handling data is important when looking after children for example whilst a child is in school all their documents must be kept confidential in case any of the other children or irrelevant staff members read or disclose any confidential information. The only time data or information about child should be revealed is if the child is at risk or in danger. Then the relevant person can inform the carer or relevant person to make sure the child is kept safe. Keeping childrens medical records safe is also important in case they ever need reviewed or used in case of emergency. Health and Safety Policy This policy promotes making sure the child is kept safe and in a safe environment for example there are a few policies put in place to make sure this is possible. They are RIDDOR  (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) This is an assessment that must be put in place and a report filed upon if a child is injured in school or any other official place of work. For parents or carers this makes sure it is dealt with and supported correctly it also keeps children safe. COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) This is similar to the RIDDOR policy I have expanded on above. All people taking care of the child must make sure all harmful substances are kept away from the child to prevent serious or injury or death. Risk Assessments. Risk assessments are carried out everywhere a child is looked after to make sure the environment and building is safe for the child to live or be taught in. This is a mandatory legal document especially in a school or care environment. This could put a parent or carers mind at risk knowing there child is safe. Health Policy It is a legal requirement that all children must get free healthcare throughout their childhood and adolescent life if needed for example medical care, dentistry care and mental support if needed. This helps support the child so they can stay healthy and get the right support they need. It also helps the parent so they don’t need to worry about the financial side as all this support is free. Education Policy Education is mandatory until you are 18 as of 2012. This is so children don’t fall out of education at 16. You can go down many routes when leaving school for example college, sixth form, training or apprentiships. There is also a legal standard of education in the United Kingdom that must be followed, there are 224 policies within 1 policy itself for education ranging from Reducing violent and gun crime to Reforming qualifications and the curriculum to better prepare pupils for life after school. Having policies in place makes sure that children get the right standard of education and that parents and carers can go out to work whilst their children are at school to make sure they can give their children the best standard of life. It also sets the child up for a good standard of life with good qualifications and life skills. Play Policy When children are in education especially primary school it is a legal requirement that they get break time and toys and equipment to use during this time. The best way for a child to learn is using exploratory learning and learning by trial and error. This is how a child learns life and social skills from a young age. When a child starts school this also gets them well adjusted to letting go from spending all their time with there parent or carer. Every Child Matters 1 Be Healthy 2 Stay Safe 3 Enjoy and Achieve 4 Make a Positive Contribution 5 Achieve Economic Wellbeing I believe that all they above policies shape a childs life and with the right guidance from parents, carers and education you can shape a decent outcome and setup for a childs life and development. The Collector :: essays research papers

John Fowles - The Collector â€Å"The Collector† by John Fowles deals with a man’s obsession with a woman that turns to kidnap and eventually death. What attracted me to this book was the unusual topic of obsession and intriguing title. In my review I intend to study how the writer, John Fowles, portrays an obsessive personality - though Frederick’s actions, dialogue, and his changing relationship with his obsession Miranda. The book is set around the two main characters of Frederick and the girl he is obsessed with Miranda and is mainly set in Sussex around the middle of the 20th century. His obsession with Miranda begins in his hometown where he merely watches her from afar but she then moves away to London to go to college so his obsession dies away. After winning the pools, however, his obsession takes a new turn. He moves to London, on the advice of the ‘pools people’, where he sees Miranda again and his obsession grows once more. Once in London he starts to develop a fantasy to capture Miranda but never really intends to act upon it until he come across a house that fits perfectly into his fantasy. The buying of this house then encourages him to carry out his fantasy and kidnap her. This book is arranged in an unusual way. The first chapter is told from the view point of Frederick of the capturing and after the capture of Miranda. The second chapter is in diary form; this is told from Miranda’s point of view. In this she recounts people and events from before she was captured and also describes her escape attempts. This chapter is very good in letting us see how Miranda perceives the events that are happening to her and provides a contrast to Frederick. The third is back to Frederick’s point of view and is about Miranda’s illness, Frederick’s attempt to help her and his reactions. The fourth chapter is very short and is about Frederick finding Miranda’s diary, chapter two in the book, and realising that she never felt anything but resentment for him. It also introduces the idea that he may do it again for a comparison. Frederick, looking back on his experience with Miranda, tells the book in the form a dialogue with the reader. The writer, Fowles, demonstrates Frederick’s obsessive personality through his actions. One of these is the way he marks down the viewing of Miranda in his diary.

Inferno: The Cantica of Artful Horror

Dante Alighieri’s â€Å"Inferno†, only one part of the Divine Comedy though hailed by many as the most compelling of the three canticas, deserves to be called a literary classic because it is not only an exceptional example of classical literary horror, but it is also a representation of how medieval people envision hell.   It is a blend of grotesque monsters and historical figures whose binding tie is sin in its many forms. Alighieri invites the reader to enter the nine circles of hell; the deeper the circle, the more serious the sin.   Unlike most contemporary horror that showcase graphic violence wrought by horrifying monsters or a more intellectual and atmospheric environment, Alighieri attempts to create horror that is both gruesome and intelligently peopled by real historical people and real sins.   Moreover, the reader can almost believe his version of what hell’s landscape is like. The Inferno explores the edge of limbo to the innermost circle of the Malebolge.   In each step of the journey, depictions of suffering bring the reader to an awareness of base human desires making him or her face the reality that people help create the nine circles of hell by living sinfully.   A piece of literature that is still remembered after more than 700 years must be considered a literary classic representing a genre that may not receive as many praises as others.   Though a classic piece that touches on views of the Christian afterlife, true to its horror genre â€Å"Inferno† still shocks and frightens.
